Choosing curriculum doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to confidently select units, understand our levels, and plan a year that supports both learning and peace in your home.

  • What is a literature-based unit study?

A literature-based unit study uses a single book as the foundation for learning, weaving reading, writing, discussion, projects, and real-world connections together into one meaningful experience. Instead of separate, disconnected lessons, your child explores themes, history, geography, art, and critical thinking through the story they’re reading.

It’s an immersive, flexible approach that builds deep understanding, strengthens comprehension, and makes learning feel natural and memorable.

  • How are Prairie & Pine Units Structured?

Each Prairie & Pine unit study is designed to be flexible, and rich with meaningful learning. Every unit includes a Student Workbook and a Parent Guide, which walk you through the book chapter by chapter. Students engage with a blend of reading, writing, projects, research activities, and creative reflection, all intentionally connected to the themes of the novel.

Units are designed to be completed over 8 weeks, but they can be stretched or shortened to fit your family’s rhythm. Clear pacing guides, rubrics, and step-by-step instructions make teaching simple, while still giving you the freedom to adapt lessons to your child’s needs and interests.

  • Elementary vs. Middle and High School Units

The biggest difference between our Elementary units and our Middle and High School units is the level of coverage and completeness. Our Middle and High School units address all Common Core ELA standards, making them a full, comprehensive language arts curriculum.

In contrast, our Elementary units are supplementary literature-based studies. They do not teach reading, grammar, or cover all standards; instead, they are designed to enrich your child’s learning through meaningful stories and hands-on activities while you use your preferred foundational ELA program alongside them.
