FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to complete a unit?

Each of our units includes an 8-week pacing guide, offering a suggested timeline that allows for a deep exploration of four books per school year. While this schedule provides structure, we encourage you to adjust the pacing to fit the unique needs of your family. You know your children best, and our units are designed to be flexible, allowing you to move at a pace that works for everyone.

Are the units open and go?

Everything your student needs to complete the unit is included in the workbook. For any external resources that couldn’t be printed due to copyright restrictions, we’ve provided QR codes for easy access. The workbook is designed for students to dive in each day without hesitation. However, this is not intended to be a completely hands-off curriculum for parents. Certain assignments will need to be graded, and we recommend reviewing important elements like rubrics with your student before they begin major tasks. We also suggest reading through the entire Parent Guide before starting the unit to ensure a smooth experience.

What subjects are covered in your unit studies?

Our unit studies are literature-based but incorporate a wide range of subjects, including language arts, history, science, and social studies. For example, the Exploring the American Food System unit covers topics such as botany, politics, and sustainable agriculture, while Hatchet integrates survival skills and personal growth themes.

What credits does this count for?

Each of our unit studies are meet the standards of English Language Arts curriculum that counts towards a reading and writing credit. Additionally, all of our units count towards a social science credit and some can count towards a history or science one as well.

Do I need to purchase additional materials?

Yes, our unit studies are centered around anchor texts/books, which you will need to purchase separately. We recommend buying these through your local bookstore or online. All other necessary materials, such as the parent/teacher guide, student workbook, and bonus resources, are included with your purchase.

What is included in the Parent Guide?

The Parent Guide is a comprehensive resource that walks you through each step of the unit. It includes a pacing guide, instructions for assignments, grading rubrics, and tips for helping your child develop critical thinking and analytical skills. The guide empowers parents to feel confident in providing a high-quality education, regardless of their teaching background.

What age group is your curriculum designed for?

Our curriculum is primarily for high school and middle school, however it is designed to be flexible and can be adapted for a variety of ages. Many parents find that they can easily modify them to suit younger learners. Each unit study specifies the audience it was created for.

Will your curriculum work if I have a wide range of kids?

Yes! While our curriculum is primarily designed for middle and high school students, many families have successfully used our units with elementary-aged children. This became especially popular after we released the Exploring the American Food System unit featuring Joel Salatin’s book. In response, we’ve created a free downloadable guide with suggestions on how to adapt our units based on age and skill level. You can find it in the “Shop” section of our website.

Why do you use QR codes?

Due to copyright restrictions, we are unable to include many of the supplemental resources directly in our units. Additionally, we often incorporate videos and songs as teaching tools. To ensure students can still access these materials, we provide QR codes with direct links, which students can use if they have access to digital devices. This approach offers some technology time without turning the entire day into screen time. For parents who prefer not to use QR codes, we’ve included all links in the Parent Guide so you can print the resources ahead of time if needed.

Is this secular or religious?

Our curriculum is written from a completely neutral perspective, classifying it as secular. We know there are many families who wish to incorporate their faith into their learning, and there are many opportunities to do so with our unit studies, which we explain in our parent guides!
